In accordance with DARPA Instruction 65 (DI 65), material considered to be contracted fundamental research does not require public release review. To determine if your submission requires a review, please review your contract with DARPA or search our database.
How do I check the status of a public release request?
Status checks should be directed to PRC@darpa.mil or to (571)218-4235. Please provide the assigned case number to expedite your request.
How long does the process take?
Requests for public release generally take a minimum of 20 business days. However, complexity of material or inclusion of other DoD equities may require additional processing, thereby increasing review time.
What is Distribution Statement A?
Distribution Statement A is used for unlimited distribution as directed by DoD Directive 5230.9, “Clearance of DoD Information for Public Release.”
Why would my request be referred to another agency?
Information proposed for public release, for which DARPA is not able to determine the classification level, policy or International Trade in Arms Regulation (ITAR) implications; or if the submission contains equities from other DoD components the request is forwarded to the Directorate Freedom of Information and Security Review (DFOISR), Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD), or other DoD component(s) for determination.
What if I need a more restrictive distribution?
DARPA Program Managers are authorized to assign all other Distribution Statements. See DoD Directive 5230.24, “Distribution Statements on Technical Documents” for further information or contact the Technical Information Office.
Do abstracts need to be cleared for public release?
Yes, abstracts published in advance of a completed paper or manuscript, etc., are required to be cleared through the public release process. Clearance of an abstract does not fulfill the requirement to submit the full text before publication.
What type of media should be used for submission?
Microsoft Office 2007 compatible documents and videos on CD are preferred. Videos submitted on VHS must be converted and will increase processing time.
Who is required to request public release approval?
All DARPA personnel and DARPA funded performers are required to request public release clearance for DARPA information intended for release to the public, regardless of media.
Information originated outside of DARPA requires written release approval by the originator; i.e., company proprietary information, privacy data, or data originated by another organization, etc.
